The Mamingwey Burn Survivor Society was formed in Manitoba in 2003. We are a volunteer-run charity that provides support for burn survivors by planning and holding annual conferences for burn survivors, their families and friends, as well as Burn Unit staff and firefighters. The journey from burn patient to burn survivor is a long and painful one. Physical pain, long hospitalizations, disfigurement, and emotional and psychological trauma are issues that survivors experience. Many burn survivors have to deal with a change in their appearance, which directly affects their self-esteem and body image. Some burn survivors find it overwhelming to be seen out in public, so bringing burn survivors together allows them to provide support for one another, share their stories, and help each other heal from the psychological aspects of their unique injuries.
